THE DOG WHO GRABS THINGS AND RUNS Off

Don't be like one client of mine who didn't take the dog's clowning seriously until he swallowed a $100 bill.

The day your dog grabs a glove and plays hide 'n'seek with you, get busy. Dogs grab things and run in order to get attention and discipline. If a dog is getting enough structure, he won't behave this way.

To stop such behavior, do several things:

  1. Temporarily eliminate the temptations. Put gloves, magazines, papers, scarves, socks, money, and other small goodies away. Get neat. At least for a couple of months.
  2. Start doing some effective obedience work at the beginning of each day so that the day begins on the right tone. If the dog grows restless as the day progresses, try a little more work.
  3. Be sure the dog always has chewies and dog toys in abundance. (And be sure he doesn't have worms.) Otherwise, your possessions are fair game.
