Cryptorchidism (retained testicle) is a condition present at birth in which one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum from where they develop in the abdomen. If the testicle has not descended into the scrotum by approximately two months of age, there usually is little chance that further descent will occur.
The undescended testicle is usually underdeveloped and non-functional, although it is a potential source of problems later in life if not removed. (Can become cancerous) The undescended testicle may remain within the abdomen or it may be located in the inguinal (groin) tissues.
Cryptorchidism is believed to be an inherited trait that could be passed on to the next generation if the animal is allowed to reproduce. Bilateral castration (removal of both testes) is recommended in all affected animals.
Castration is the recommended treatment of choice for pets with Cryptorchidism. Depending on where the undescended testicle is located, the incision may be in the inguinal skin or into the abdomen. The normal (descended) testicle is removed in the regular manner. Let the local vet examine the dog thoroughly and advice accordingly. |

I have a 8.5 y/o Labrador Retriever who was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 2 years ago. This was diagnosed when he was drinking a lot of water, but he wasn\'t tested for Cushings. About few days ago, he was diagnosed with fungal infection between his rear legs and was given Kiskin lotion, which is to be applied once everyday for a month. A couple of days ago, I started noticing his increase in appetite and increased thirst and thought that it could be canine Cushing\'s Disease. Could this be because he is licking the Kiskin solution off his skin, which contains the corticosteroid Clobetasol? We put him in a muzzle for about an hour after applying the medication.

Using him as a stud dog is not recommended. Chryptorchididsm or retained testicle is a genetic problem. You can go for removal of the retained testicle as it can turn cancerous in later life. |

I have a 6 month old cocker [male]. He had food poisoning recently and was given Amox. for five days. His appetite has suddenly increased. 500 gms of rice and chicken doesn\'t seem enough. How much food must he have?

How much of chicken are you feeding? Start adding some vegetables in his diet. That will keep him full with good nutrients. |

I own a five year old lab, frosty. Frosty is a quite active and well taken care of dog. He is suffers from bouts skin infections ( mostly rashes and hair fall). Currently he has rashes , and redness in some areas around his neck. We have also seen that his testicles have become very pinkish red. The last week he was howling of pain in the night. The next day we have taken him to the vet. The vet suggested that he has bacterial infection and put him on a drugs (wylosone, bayrocin) course for about a week now. It has reduced the infections, however I would want to what could cause this problem. Since my parents have become old they are unable to bath him so often(sometime it is about 2 months of gap). He drinks milk and eats milk bread in the mornings , has rice and chicken for lunch and dinner every day. He give him chews ( one a day). He is a fussy eater and does not like any ready made food( we tried earlier and failed). I am not sure if the nutrition or hygine is causing the problem. Could you also suggest some good shampoos, as his skin is dry and flaky (We used, pet ben, oat meal shampoo).
Please suggest some good vet near by and remedies for rashes.

Please try the medication suggested by your vet. Any skin problem takes 15-20 days to show results. Herbal shampoos can be tried in allergic cases. |

My dog name is cookie he is 10 ½ year old white Pomeranian Last year we saw bumps underneath the skin in back after sometime it seems like open wound in circle. When we have consulted a veterinary doctor they told us that it’s a tumor and cookie got operated on 23rd April 2009. After 2 week of operation the bumps appears in the same area. This time the doctor advised the biopsy, blood test, ultrasound, and x ray. And told us that there is a malignant tumor and it has to be operated. He was again operated on 8th August 2009. But after 2 to 3 weeks of operation the bumps again came on both the right and left side of the legs side and the same problem started again.
When we again consulted the doctor they told us that it is a malignant cancerous tumor of skin and it can’t be treated and the dog can live up to 6 months to 1 year. They told us that they can give chemotherapy but it’s also has many side effects. So they advised for simply clean the area and applied some creams to avoid further spreading of the tumors.
Kindly advice madam what to do so that the spreading of tumors can be stopped and he can live a normal life.
I want to save him from this disease.

I have a 6 month old german spitz dog .
Recently I noticed that he has only one testicle .
Is this bad or harmful ?
Nowadays whenever I take him to the roof , he will frequently go near the pillars and urinate their standing on three legs with one of the hind legs raised upward which is more at the first time but as he keeps on urinating the amount decreases to 1-2-3 drops . He didn\'t used to do this earlier.
Earlier he used to sit and urinate.
Is this harmful or any sign of disease?
Shall I take him to the vet?
What shall I do???

Lifting of one leg while passing urine in male dogs is normal. If one testicle is retained, consult your vet. Your dog will have to undergo an operation for removal of the retained testicle. |

A combination of healthy diet, maintaining a normal weight, exercise, massage, warm and dry sleeping areas, joint supplements, anti-inflammatories and pain-relieving medication can help manage the condition. What is the food that he is offered now? Veg? Non-veg? Home food or commewrcial food available in the market? |

Kookie, one of the Daschunds I have has been a very active dog. She used to come for brisk walks that lasted for around 45 min to an hour. But of late, she is displaying signs of tiredness. Even after a short walk, while waiting for the lift, she sits instead of standing. She will complete 7 years this October. Kindly assist. It pains me to see such an active and jolly dog becoming so quite and tired. Is there anything I can do? I understand that age is getting to her, and hence I do not stress he either much these days. But the concern is that even the basic walks tires her out. (just for information:-one of her pups has been retained by us to keep her company. The pup retained too is a female ... Ginger and is 2 yrs and 9 months old). Eagerly awaiting your response.

It is very heartening to know how much you love your pet dog. I'm sure he is worth all the love you can give him in the world.
I believe your pet dog will be happiest with you. If he can adjust to the heat in Delhi, where I am sure you keep him in an air-conditioned room, he will be able to adjust in Chennai. Maybe when it gets too hot, you can clip his hair short.
The best way for you to travel with him would be by air. Both Air India and Jet Airways accept pets. |

Dear Doctor, My 11 month old Cocker Spaniel puppy has been diagnosed with an enlarged heart (she had a dry cough for 10 days and then we went in for an Xray and found that the heart was touching the diaphragm). My current doctor wants to continue cough medicine and check again after a week. He says it should subside on its own. Please can you recommend a good doctor / clinic in Mumbai from whom we can take a second opinion for my puppy. Also what precautions should I take in terms of diet, exercise given her condition.

My pet dog (doberman) is 11 yrs. old and developed a tumor near his anal opening. And he is unable to pass his potty. Is is side effect of the medicine given. What are his chances in such a case.

How to manage a dog (female Lab) and a new-born infant at home. The dog moves around all over the house and is normally not on leash. Although she is very gentle and does not disturb the baby, does her hair or saliva cause any infection in the baby.
Suzee
Bangalore |

The dog with an infant should be kept absolutely clean. Allergic reactions may be seen but are not so common. The dog should be bathed regularly, brushed daily and be checked for ticks and fleas on everyday basis. Her teeth should be brushed every one or two days. Get her examined by your vet frequently for skin, gastrointestinal or respiratory ailments. Get her stools checked for parasites. As far as possible do not allow her to lick your baby's face. Wash your hands every time you touch/ pat/cuddle your dog and supervise her when she is near the baby. |

I have a miniature Beagle (13 inch) who is now 8 months old. He has had one testicle Since birth and when I got him checked earlier in Calcutta (my home town) the vet said he is born with only one testicle and that nothing can be done, and its not dangerous. Off late I have heard friends who have dogs with the same problem, and were adviced hormone treatements as the other testicle is definitely somewhere and needs to be brought back in place, or else may prove to be cancerous.
It would be of great help if you too could help me out with a solution and the way forward.
