Cats are obligate or true carnivores so they must have meat/fish/meat fat daily to remain healthy but if your kitty likes parle g biscuits then one a day won't be an issue. I know of cats who eat broccoli, chips and some other non meat things, just remember meat is the most important food you can feed your kitty. Without meat, cats develop blindness among other things and eventually die.
And while it is true that all kittens and pups have the ability to digest milk until they are weaned they lost this ability after weaning. Humans and our domestic pets are the only mammals that continue to drink milk after weaning. Some cats and dogs don't have a prob drinking milk but most do. They can develop diarrhea and upset tummies from drinking milk so best to not give them milk. |

Hi Ashwani,
Diarrhea is a symptom not a disease. There are many things that may cause the diarrhea and one of them is change of diet. Are there any other symptoms, fever, vomiting, pain etc? Did your vet do blood work if so what were the results of the CBC?
If the diarrhea continues and it seems to be just the change of diet, wIthhold food for 12 hours if the pup is young 24 hours for an adult. This gives the digestive system a chance to settle down.Do NOT with hold water since there is a risk of dehydration with diarrhea.
After the 24 hours are up put the dog on a bland diet of 50% boiled rice and 50% boiled chicken or 50-50 of boiled rice and minced beef for the next two to three days.Minced beef is the better choice for this treatment but chicken is ok. If this doesn't cure it then you may need to do further testing to determine just what is going on.
Once the diarrhea has cleared up put your dog on a high quality diet. Buy the best dog food you can afford. Fillers like corn and wheat are just that fillers. I recommend dry brands like Eukanuba or Royal Canin. There are also other good brands out there. Cheaper foods that use fillers like corn and veggies and carbs will pass right through your dogs system.
Do not give your dog milk it will only exacerbate the diarrhea.
Make sure the dog is getting plenty of water since diarrhea drains the dog of water. You don't need dehydration on top of diarrhea. If the dog is not drinking I suggest giving 8 mls of water every 30 minutes for a day. Use a syringe without the needle to give the dog water. Put the syringe in the side of the mouth and gently pump in the water.
Pumpkin works wonder too for both diarrhea and constipation in dogs. Boil the pumpkin in a cooker than puree it. Give your dog a couple of teaspoons a day, you may have to disguise it in food or since it's pureed you can syringe it.
If your dog has chronic diarrhea than it is important the vet gets to the root of the problem. Chronic just means lasting for more than several days.
Back to diet once your pup is better. Use the highest quality foods you can afford. Dogs may not require meat but since they are more carnivore than omnivore I always suggest a diet high in meat. 60-75 % of your dogs diet should be quality meat and 10% of that should be in the form of meat based fat. The rest of the diet should be cooked veggies and rice, preferably brown rice.
There's a saying "If you put rubbish in, rubbish will come out"
Don't forget diarrhea can be life threatening so make sure the vet knows if the diarrhea continues.
Good luck and do get in touch if you have more questions. |

I have a 6 month old bull terrier which i bought only 5 days ago . We gave him the same food we give to our other doberman but he developped severe dierea . what in your view would be the best diet for him .

First of all what did you feed him? When you purchased him did you find out what his/her diet had been?
Does he still have diarrhea? Have you taken him to a vet if he still has it? Diarrhea can be a life threatening problem if it persists. Was the dog in good health when you got him? Please respond back with the answers I have requested and then we can proceed from there. |

I am giving my dog (2 years) pedigree (chicken and rice formula) once a day about 64 oz quantity..and one cup boiled rice..Is that good for him..or i need to change his diet..

No you don't need to change the diet but what I always recommend is splitting the meal into 2 and serving once in the morning and once in the early evening. For a little variety add some boiled eggs occasionally, dont forget once the eggs are boiled to crush up the eggshells and add to meals for the calcium. You can give some well cooked veggies in the meals, whatever your doggie likes. Add some cucumber once in awhile too. Remember dogs like humans like some variety in their meals, to eat the same thing day in and day out gets boring so try some of the foods I have listed. In place of the rice try a little barley boiled in chicken broth. If you boil chicken then save the broth for doggy soup or as an addition to the meal. I would also recommend a good daily vitamin, omega 3 and bcomplex. If your dog likes fruit try some watermelon chunks as a treat. No raisin or grapes since these can be deadly. |

I have a 5 month old pug Cherie, off late she has been itching herself all over and has been chewing and licking on her front paws. also ive noticed dry flaky wounds on her skin.she does not have fleas or ticks.I am feeding her bread and diluted milk in the mornings.
with beef kheema and rice for klunch and dinner. with a spoonfull of curd sometimes in the noon.
isn something wrong with her diet? is she allergic to something?
I also give her parle-g and marie biscuits occasionaly.

She may be having some type of allergic reaction to something. The first thing you should do is see your vet. If the vet suspects a food allergy they will explain how an elimination diet works. If it is another type of allergy then they must determine just what your Cherie is allergic too. It could also be something else. So go see your vet.
Many pets do have food allergies to wheat products as well as milk or any number of other food items.Hope this helps. |

Can u plz tell me Is this breed German Shephard require non-veg in his diet. Is it necessary?
Sonal Sahal |
 |
All dogs need meat in their diets. Dogs may be classed as omnivores but in reality they are carnivores. All dogs can survive on a veg diet but if you want your dog to thrive then they require a meat and meat fat based diet. Take a look at the domestic dogs nearest relative, it's the North American grey wolf. What do wolves eat? Deer, rabbit, rodents etc (Their meat diet should include some rice or barley or another carb. Well cooked veggies can be added as can fruits Make sure the foods you use are not toxic to your dog).
I always ask pet parents, " When was the last time you saw a dog grazing in a meadow or corn field?" |

So can u please recommend which fish can be given and are the above foods harmful for him? He is not too fond of doggie food.

First I would suggest instead of one big meal a day break the meal into two or three smaller meals. Fish is ok to give a dog as long as you debone it, and that means all the bones. So try fish that are easy to debone. My biggest issue with fish is the mercury content in them. The bigger the fish the more contamination. Even freshwater fish contain mercury so if you decide to feed fish I would limit it to once a week.
Eggs are excellent for your dog and you can scramble them as well as boil. They're a wonderful source of protein particularly the yolk. As well as the eggs I would also rinse the eggshells out well let them dry over night and then throw them in your mixie to powder them add 1 tsp per meal. You can keep the powder in the freezer. Shells are a great source for calcium. I add it to all my doggy meals. I would lay off the bread since we are seeing more and more allergies to wheat and wheat gluten.
The rice is also good. Remember though your dog may be classed an omnivore but they are more carnivores than omnivores. So the proportions should be about 60-70% meat and meat fats (also very necessary for dogs). The fat should compromise about 10% of the meat protein. Butter is also ok for your dog. How often are you feeding your dog the cashew barfi? An occasional treat of it is ok but they are high in fat so again limit the amount you give him.. Pugs can put on weight and become overweight and this is a bigger issue since an overweight dog is an unhealthy dog.
Again any fish is ok just remember what I said about mercury. |

We have a labrador aged 11 months and had to give him \'doxyheal\' for 21 days to cure him of tick fever. His apetite has decreased since then. He does not like to eat wet food. We normally give him meat, rice and boiled veg and a boiled egg. But he does not eat the rice and veg. of late.. What should be done. Have been giving him liver tonics as well.

Sorry to hear about your dogs tick fever. As you are aware ack of
appetite is one of the symptoms of the disease. So what can you as
good pet parents due to make his meals more palatable and interesting?
Dogs as people like variety in their meals. You don't tell me what
meats and veggies you use in his meals. So try this. Put chicken in a
pot add filtered water to cover, add some parsley, some celery, and
bring to a boil. Let simmer after that for 45 minutes, this will give
you a broth you can either use as a soup, in his meals or to cook the
rice in. Making veggies in the pressure cooker is the best way to make
them since it is hard for doggies to digest veg.
The occasional raw
carrot or cucumber is not harmful to your baby. Fruits on the other
hand are easily digestable so maybe add fruit like apple or pineapple
or peach to his meal. NO grapes or raisns, or onions. Then to spice
up his meals try using some rosemary, sage, dill, honey, maple syrup,
melted butter or any spice you know your doggy likes. Don't go
overboard spicing it up try a little in each meal to see how your dog
likes the taste. Also since our dogs require fat in their diets, if
you have the time and inclination, render down some solid meat fat (I
use pork fat I get from my butcher to add to dog meals and then use
the solid bits of fat as treats- I keep both the rendered fat as well
as the fat bits in the freezer, by the way doggies love the fat
treats) If you want to know how to do this please send your inquiry to
the me via Pet Experts and will send the recipe to you if you enclose
an email addy.
Vary his diet daily. As I said Variety is the spice of life not only
for humans but for doggies.
Vary the meats you use, chicken, mutton,
pork, and beef are all good choices. Boil them, microwave them, fry
them or bake them to give a little bit of a different taste to each
meat. You can even stir fry all the cooked ingredients in a wok or fry
pan using a bit of olive oil or sunflower oil.
Eggs are fine since they contribute necessary calcium to the meals.
As far as the rice you can substitute pasta or potatoes. I make a
chicken stew with mashed potatoes for the doggies. Veggies/fruits can
include green beans, cabbage and apples, papaya, honey glazed carrots,
cauliflower, broccoli, and just about any veg your baby will eat. Do
try some of these suggestions and let me know what happens. As always
consult with your vet on any health issue that arise. |

My three and half yr pug has hip dysplasia. Doc told us he can develop arthritis in future.tell me what kind of diet i should follow.
Mrs. Paul

By feeding your baby the proper things you as a pet parent can help reduce the inflammation as well as help the pain of hip dysplasia and arthritiis. I would like to know if your vet has your dog on glucomsamine chrondriton supplements and any vitamins or minerals?
The foods your dog should avoid are any grains, which actually increase the inflammation. Grains like wheat, rice, pasta, and corn Nor should you dog get starches like potatoes, carrots, tomatoes or capsicums. The diet should be high in animal proteins;meat fish eggs and fat- which is very important for all dogs. You can add veggies like broccolli, cabbage, or spinach.
Certain vitamins should be included in the diet; vitamin C and E are excellant for dogs with joint problems.I also would add a high quality omega 3 oil like (cold pressed,if available,if not use just a regular flax) flaxseed oil or fish oil, my objection to fish oil is that there may be mercury contained in it and no one, 4 legged or two legged needs that. Any meat I would use I would microwave lightly. When we cook food we loose the good stuff in it so I use the microwave just to slightly cook the meat. Veggies on the other hand should be cooked more thoroughly since dogs have a bit of a hard time digesting them.
I hope this helps a little and I hope your baby feels better soon. Do let me know how he is progressing and feel free to contact us at any time. |

I have 6 Persian cats. I feed them Royal Canin Fit32, Persian
30 and Persian Kitten 32. Then Once a day, i give them Butch Catfood also.
Should i add fish, chicken gizzard and chicken heart to their diet?
If yes, Then should it be raw or boiled?
Apart from this i also give them \"My Beau\" supplement for cats every alternate day.
I read somewhere that whiskars canned food is not good for cats as it is made from by-products. Any other canned foods that is available in India which is good for them?
As per the homecooked food. what can i give them just as a varity. How about egg white omlette (as protien)
I do not give them milk.

Fish can be added daily as long as it is cooked and deboned. It is
important to debone since cats have been known to choke on bones. They
can occasionally have human canned tuna in water but I limit that also
to once every two weeks since there is no taurine, an essential amino
acid cats require.
As far as eggs, yes by all means let them have some white as well as
the occasional yoke since the yoke has a lots of protein in it. Yokes
I give every few weeks.
Whiskas is not a great food to feed cats or dogs.
By products are not always bad it depends on what the by products are,
so I try to stay away form any foods that list by product since the
companies do not go into details regarding the by products.
Most of the dry foods made commercially are not such a hot idea unless
it is one of the organic and natural ones which unfortunately are not
readily available here. Although recently I met with a young man who
wants to import quality dry cat/ dog food into India. I will keep the
column posted as to when and if he has succeded in doing this.
If you google cats best foods then it will bring up a large list of
sites, again be careful particularly if it a list maintained by a pet
food company.
I must say I think you are a very well informed pet parent and
congratulate you on your choices for your "kids". Milk as you know is
not really good for cats or dogs and again I think you have done your
homework well.

Whenever I think about what's good for my 5 year old dalmation - I am always confused. So I experiement and feed her different things. Sometime I thought Dog food is good - so I fed her royal Canine. Then someone told me that it is better to feed homecooked meals - so I gave her rice, chicken and vegetables in the night and a small meal of milk and chappatis in the morning.
Can u help me? Is the meal I am giving her balanced meal. I feed her 1/2 kg of chicken, equal quantity of cooked rice and a large handful of vegetables for one meal. Should I give her some supplements. I want her to have a long and healthy life.

I like home cooked meals for the dogs but they need to have the proper nutrients in them along with the food. Dogs are carnivores even though they are classed as omnivores, so dogs should be fed meat. 50-70% of a dog's diet should be meat based protein.Out of the 50-70% meat 15-20% should be meat fat. I feed the dogs 60-70% meat/fat. And in case anyone wonders if meat causes aggression this is simply a fallacy.
This will be the bulk of your dogs meals. Supplement it with rice and well cooked veggies. ( No onions) Vegetables need to be well cooked since dogs have a hard time digesting them. An occasional carrot stick isn't going to hurt and lots of dogs like them so feel free to occasionally treat them with raw veggies.
Supplements that should be added to a healthy dogs meals are calcium, B complex, omega 3's, Vit. E and phosphorus . Ask your vet for a good quality multi vitamin to add to the food. Omega 3's are great to give dogs ( ppl too) so pick up a good quality Omega 3 and add one teaspoon to each meal.
There is nothing wrong with Commercial Dog Food IF the food is nutritionally sound for a dog. Fillers like corn and other additives are just that- fillers. Check your pet food labels if the first three to four ingredients are not meat or meat byproducts then the dog food is inappropriate.
I do not give dogs milk or chappatis, occasionally is ok but I would not do it daily. Many dogs develop food allergies to wheat and milk is just not digestable for dogs. It's the sugars in the milk they can't digest. It can lead to loose motions as well as upset tummies. Many vets are seeing more and more allergies in dogs and most of that can be blamed on food.
I like to feed adult dogs twice a day. Same amount of food as once a day but split into two portions. Variety is the spice of life and the same goes for your dog so feed them different things on different days.
I hope this has helped you in your quest for the best for your baby. |

Puppies require lots of protein at this stage of their life. The protein should be meat based, chicken, beef, pork, lamb or mutton are all ideal for a growing pup. You can boil or bake the meat .(When I boil my meat for the dogs I cool the broth and use it in their meals.) Once it is cool debone it, if necessary ( I do not feed my dogs any bones due to internal injuries that might occur) Add some rice to the mixture but remember the bulk of the food should be the meat (60-70 %). Veggies, like well cooked carrot or cabbage can also be added as well as a hard boiled egg. Crush up the egg shell to a fine powder and add one teaspoon to each meal. Get some Omega 3 oil Add one teaspoon to each meal. Buy a good quality B complex supplement and add this to the food. Remember dogs like a varied diet too so do chicken one day and another meat the next day.
Your pup should be eating four meals a day. You didn't mention his weight but food proportions should be adjusted to his weight. Ask your vet what amount each meal should be. We don't want you to overfeed your pup, if he gains too much weight this can cause many health problems. Be sure there is always fresh water for him to drink. Wash his food bowl after he eats so it's nice and clean for his next meal. His water bowl should be washed and refilled twice a day.
Milk is not a good idea for your pup since dogs cannot digest the sugars in milk. Milk can lead to loose motions and upset tummies.
I hope this helps in answering your question.
As far as a lead get a good leash preferably made of material and not chain. His collar too should be a flexible cloth collar and not a chain.
Good luck and do let us know how your baby is doing. |

Can I give my dogs bones? |
 |
The real question is “should I give my dogs bones”? The answer quite simply is NO. The reason is that bones, raw or cooked can and do splinter and can cause major internal issues, some life threatening . Torn esophagus ‘ that may require surgery, impacted stomachs and colons and even bones lodging in the throat are just some of the problems associated with feeding bones. If you want to give your dogs bones the best way is to do so is to grind the bones finely and add it to their foods. (Bone meal) Many vets now tell their clients not to feed bones. |

What should my family be feeding our cat Mittens? |
 |
Cats are obligate or true carnivores. All this means is that for cats to survive they MUST have meat. Just think about all the shows you’ve seen on tv about wild cats, lions, tigers, cheetahs etc, how many have you ever seen eating vegetables or rice? None, right? Your little housecat is in the same family as the big cats and they MUST have meat. If you feed your kitty a vegetarian diet they may very well eat it but sooner or later they will develop health problems blindness, stomach problems and eventually if they don’t get meat based protein they die. Some people have told me but I feed my cat only veggies. My question to them is , “Does your cat go out?” Invariably, the answer is yes and once Fluffy is outside she hunts and she hunts meat so she gets her dietary intake of meat based protein. Cats must must have meat based protein |

 |
What foods should I not feed my dog? |
 |
Some of our favourite foods are toxic and can cause death in dogs. Some of the foods not to be fed are:
- Grapes or raisins which can and sometimes do cause fatalities.
- Chocolate
- Onions and to a lesser extent garlic (both are in the same food family)
- Alcohol
- Coffee
- Bones
- Macadamia nuts
- Milk ( to a lesser degree but dogs don’t have the proper enzymes to digest milk and it can cause diarrhea and upset tummys)
Ask your vet for a list of other foods that your dog should not eat. |
| |
 |
Can I give my dog table scraps?
|
 |
Well of course you can but should you? Dogs like any other living being need to be fed balanced doggy diet for optimum health. Feeding table scraps incorporates foods your dog may like but really shouldn’t have . Feeding table scraps especially from the table will turn your dog into a table beggar. A dog should be fed every day in the same area . This teaches your dog his feeding area and the table should not be that area. |
| |
 |
Should I leave dry food down for my cats all the time? |
 |
No food should be left down continuously for dogs or cats. Think of it this way, do you have food out for you and your family all the time? No, right. Same goes for your pets. Feed your pets at specific times daily, place the food bowls on the floor and leave down for about a half hour ,by that time your cat will have eaten what it wants and walks away. After a half hour remove the food. Pets allowed access to food all the time will have a tendency to put on weight and obesity leads to a lot of serious health issues. |
